# Ask ION a question

> Open the ION Intelligence companion, ground a question in the records you name, and reopen or delete an earlier conversation.

## Ask a question

1. Open the companion. On a desktop page, click the ION pill in the bottom-right corner, click
   **ION Intelligence** in the sidebar, or press `⌘I` (`Ctrl+I` on Windows and Linux). On a phone,
   open the **ION** tab in the bottom navigation.
2. Type your question in the composer. `Enter` sends it; `Shift+Enter` starts a new line.
3. Optional: in a browser that supports voice input, click **Dictate prompt** and speak instead of
   typing. Dictation writes plain text, so it is unavailable while a mention is attached; the
   control says so, and removing the mentions re-enables it.
4. Read the answer in the thread. Follow up in the same composer to keep the same conversation.

Position the companion from the controls in its header: **Float**, **Dock left**, **Dock right**, and
**Minimize** (or press `Esc`). It reopens in whichever of those you left it in.

  A turn runs one at a time. While an answer is streaming, the composer is unavailable, so a second
  question cannot displace the answer you are waiting on. Opening a different conversation abandons
  the answer in flight.

## Attach context to a question

The assistant already knows the record whose page you are on. Attach anything else it should read.

1. Click **Add** beside the composer.
2. Pick a category, or type into the search box to search across categories:
   * **People**, **Teams**, and **Roles** read **Browse** and open as a list.
   * **Issues**, **Parts**, **Runs**, **Procedures**, and **Steps** read **Search only**, because
     those collections are too large to list. Type to search them. Where you have attached that
     kind before, the picker opens on those recent picks instead.
3. Click a result. It becomes a chip above the composer and stays attached, across new
   conversations too, until you remove it.

To name a person inside the sentence rather than beside it, type `@` in the composer and pick them.
`@` searches people only; every other kind is attached from **Add**. A typed mention renders as a
pill in the text and as a chip above the composer, and removing either removes both.

To detach something, click **Remove** on its chip. A chip that came from the page you are on has no
**Remove** control, because it follows the page rather than the conversation.

## Reopen or delete a conversation

1. Click **Recent conversations** in the companion's header.
2. To pick up an earlier thread, click its row. To start over instead, click **New conversation**.
3. To remove a thread, hover or tab to its row and click **Delete conversation**.
4. Confirm with **Delete**.

  Deleting a conversation removes it from your history for good. Deleting the one you have open
  clears the thread and starts a new conversation.
