# Scan with a camera

> Scan labels with a computer's or tablet's camera in a scan session that stays open between scans.

On a computer or tablet with a camera, you can scan labels with the camera instead of a handheld scanner. The **Scan with camera** dialog keeps the camera running and stays open between scans, and it asks before it moves anything or adds parts to a kit you scanned. On a phone, see [Scan on a phone](/build-hardware/labels-and-scanning/scanning/scan-on-a-phone).

## Start a camera scan session

1. In the sidebar, click **Scan with camera**. The item appears only when the device has a camera.
2. Point the camera at a barcode or QR code.

A label held in view is read once. ION ignores camera reads shorter than 10 characters.

The camera pauses while a question is open: one in the dialog, **Stop scanning?**, or a follow-up from the page, such as the aBOM quantity, a pick-run prompt, or a label print. While a question in the dialog is open, a handheld or typed scan is refused until you answer it.

For camera choice and permissions, see [Set up a camera](/build-hardware/labels-and-scanning/scanning/set-up-scanners-and-cameras#set-up-a-camera).

## Move parts to a location

To move parts you scan first:

1. Scan each part. The parts collect under **Parts to move**.
   * To move only part of a lot, lower the part's quantity. The same rules apply as for a handheld scanner. See [Move part of a lot](/build-hardware/labels-and-scanning/scanning/scan-with-a-handheld-scanner#move-part-of-a-lot).
   * To drop a part from the list, use the remove control on its row.
2. Scan the destination location. ION asks you to confirm moving the parts there.
3. Confirm the move.

To move parts one at a time as you scan them:

1. Scan the destination location. ION asks whether to move parts there. Every part or kit you scan next moves there as soon as it's scanned, without another question.
2. Confirm to start moving.
3. Scan each part or kit.
4. Click **Done**.

Scan the location again to stop moving parts to it.

### Move parts to the location you're on

When you open the dialog from a location's page, the part list offers **Move to** followed by that location's name, so you can finish without its printed label. It asks the same question as scanning the location. It doesn't appear for an archived location.

## Move a kit

Scan the kit, then scan the destination location. ION asks you to confirm the move. Click **Move kit**.

You can also scan the location first, confirm moving parts there, then scan the kit.

For which kits can move, and the extra confirmation a **Delivered** kit asks for, see [Move a kit to a location](/build-hardware/labels-and-scanning/scanning/scan-with-a-handheld-scanner#move-a-kit-to-a-location).

## Add parts to a kit

To add parts one at a time:

1. Scan the kit.
2. Scan the first part. ION asks whether to add parts to the kit. Every part you scan next is added as soon as it's scanned.
3. Confirm to start adding. ION adds the first part too.
4. Scan each remaining part.
5. Click **Done**. Until you've added a part, the dialog offers **Cancel** instead.

To add parts you scanned first, scan the kit after them, then confirm adding the parts.

Inventory in **WIP** status can't be kitted, with the same exception as a handheld scan. See [Add inventory to a kit](/build-hardware/labels-and-scanning/scanning/scan-with-a-handheld-scanner#add-inventory-to-a-kit).

## Nest a location under another location

1. Scan the location you want to move, and confirm to start moving parts to it.
2. Scan the location to nest it under. ION asks you to confirm moving the first location under the second.
3. Click **Move location**, or click **Cancel** to keep moving parts to the first location.

## Scan on a run, the kitting page, or a pick run

On these pages, a part scan with the camera always does the page's job, whatever is selected. A location or kit you scan there is only looked up.

* **Run**, with a run step selected: the part is installed on the run step. For inventory that isn't serial-tracked, its line waits until you confirm the quantity in the **Part Installs (aBOM)** dialog, then shows what was installed.
* **Kitting**, with a kit open: the part is added to the kit, and its line shows how much of the kit line is now kitted. Inventory already on the kit line isn't kitted again.
* **Pick run**: the part ticks off its row. A part the stop doesn't plan waits until you answer **That is not the planned item**. See [Scan to confirm](/manage-supply-chain/kitting/pick-runs#scan-to-confirm).

Click **Done** to close the dialog.

## Open a scanned record

Each part in the list, the location or kit you selected, and a record you looked up has an **Open** link. With nothing selected, scanning a run label looks up the run.

Opening a record ends the session. If the part list has parts you haven't moved, ION asks **Stop scanning?** first.

## Type a barcode

To enter a barcode you can't scan, type it in **Enter barcode** and click **Submit**. A typed barcode has no minimum length.

## Turn on the torch

Click **Torch** to light the label. The button appears only when the camera has a torch.

## Stop scanning

Close the dialog, or click **Done**. If the part list has parts you haven't moved, ION asks **Stop scanning?**. Click **Clear list and close** to close; nothing in ION changes.

**Cancel** on the part list clears the list without asking.
