# Create label templates

> Author ZPL barcode label templates in organization settings using variables to inject entity data like serial numbers, part numbers, and run IDs.

Go to **Settings → Organization → Barcode Labels** and use the **Inventory**, **Kits**, and **Locations** tabs under **Label templates** to choose which entity type a template applies to.

Render your ZPL with the open source [Labelary](http://labelary.com/viewer.html) service to get the sizing and spacing correct.

Templates use variables with a syntax like `${serialNumber}` to inject record data. The **Available Fields** panel to the left of the **ZPL Template** editor lists every variable you can use; click a field to insert it at the cursor.

Set the template's name, print density (DPI), and label height and width under **Template Settings**, then click **Create Template** for a new template or **Save Template** for an existing one. Use **Deactivate** to retire a template you no longer need.
