# Overview

> How ION models a Further Action (CAPA): its three working fields, its states, and its two-way link to the issues it addresses.

A Further Action (CAPA) is ION's record of a root-cause investigation and its corrective and preventive actions. It links the [issues](/track-quality/issues) that prompted it, so several related or recurring issues are investigated and resolved under one root cause rather than one at a time. The link is two-way: a linked issue lists the further action, and the further action lists the issue.

You work a further action through three fields as the investigation progresses: **Problem Statement** (what went wrong and its impact), **Analysis Notes** (the root-cause investigation), and **Resolution** (the corrective and preventive actions taken). Your organization can [rename these fields](/administration/quality-settings/rename-fields).

## States

A further action moves through four states. **Canceled** is a terminal alternative to resolving.

| State | What it means |
| --------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **In Progress** | You are investigating and recording the analysis and resolution. Fields are editable. |
| **In Review** | Submitted for approval. The configured roles must approve before it can resolve. |
| **Resolved** | Approved and closed. Fields are read-only. |
| **Canceled** | Closed without resolving. Fields are read-only. |

You [move a further action through review to resolution](/track-quality/further-actions/resolve-a-further-action), and you can cancel or reopen one from these states.

## Linked issues

A further action groups the issues it addresses, and a single investigation covers all of them. You can open a further action [directly from selected issues](/track-quality/further-actions/create-a-further-action) so those issues are linked at creation, or [link issues to an existing further action](/track-quality/further-actions/link-issues-to-a-further-action) from either side of the relationship.
