The new record copies nearly all of the original’s fields and keeps a link back to the original, so traceability holds.

Split manually

You can split from the inventory or receipts pages. Select Split to open the split dialog, then choose a Distribution method:
  • Even: divide the quantity equally across the lines you add. For example, split a quantity of 10 into 10 lines of 1.
  • Custom: enter the quantity for each line yourself. For example, split a quantity of 10 into a 3 and a 7.
Add a line for each record you want, set each line’s quantity and location, then select Split Inventory. You can’t split a record down to 0 quantity, so every resulting line keeps at least some quantity.

Automatic splitting

ION splits inventory automatically when you partially act on a quantity, so each part keeps the correct location and status. For example, kitting one unit of a quantity-2 record splits it, so the kitted unit shows a Kitted status and can move independently. Automatic splits create a new record for the affected quantity in each of these cases:
ActionNew record holds
Partial kit / unkitThe kitted / unkitted quantity
Partial install / uninstallThe installed / uninstalled quantity
Partial scrap / unscrapThe scrapped / un-scrapped quantity
Partial receiveThe received quantity
Direct splitThe quantity you split off

How a run or issue follows a split

A run or issue can relate to only one inventory record. When you split a record tied to a run or issue, the new record stays linked to that run or issue through its link back to the original record, so it still appears on the run and any related issues, including in the aBOM trace view. For splitting a record that has inventory installed on its aBOM, see Split inventory on a run.
